With two productions in spring semester, a fully staged opera and a semi-staged, condensed production, the ensemble provides students hands-on experience in performing full operatic roles. 13, 1999 and "Cosi von Tutti" is scheduled for May and June 1999. Then a nine-member class, the Lyric Opera has grown to an elite, auditioned group of 35-40 singers. The ULOS show calendar for the 1998-99 season includes thirteen performances of "Amahl and the Night Visitors" in late November and December "Opera for Lovers" on Feb. I Pagliacci, a one-act opera by Leoncavallo, is a play-within-a-play, in which actors re-enact on the stage a situation that has impinged on their personal lives. Prior to joining Utah Opera, Ewerss positions included general director of the Boston Lyric Opera (1984-1989) and assistant stage manager at San Francisco. Performers for the evening include international stars Rebecca Ravenshaw and Arnold Rawls. Now Provo has something similar to offer.
The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m., with dinner followed by a performance of opera, Gilbert & Sullivan and show music. Big hair, make-up, costumes and voices ranging all over the musical scale are things many people would expect in a city famous for opera. The annual fall gala of the Utah Lyric Opera Society will be held Friday at the Utah Valley State College ballroom.
